Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is the difference between Club and Jr. Pirates programs?

A:  Club program is a competitively-based program providing teams from our club to participate in local leagues, local tournaments as well as playing in tournaments that will require travel outside the area.  Jr. Pirates program is a intramural program for kids in Pewaukee to play against others within the community.

Q:  Who is eligible to participate on a Club team?

A:  Club players are 4th through 8th grade boys and girls in the fall of the incoming school year.  Players must be enrolled in the Pewaukee School District or attend a private/parochial school and their family's residential address must be within the boundary lines of the Pewaukee School District.  A limitation of 20% of a roster will be used when evaluating the tryout participants who do not attend the Pewaukee School District for possible selection to a club team.

Q:  How do you participate a Club team?

A:  Tryouts are held in the Spring, generally late April to early May.  Each participant is required to attend the tryout dates and times determined for their grade level.  There are two tryout dates for each grade level.  Tryouts are announced on the site.  An informational parent meeting is held prior to tryouts that one parent from each household is required to attend.

Q:  Who determines the players selected for the Club teams?

A:  A selection committee evaluates players during the tryouts.  In addition, the program director will confer with the coaches from the past season to gain additional information on each player as needed.

Q:  How many players are there on a Club roster?

A:  The goal is to have a minimum of (8) players per team and maximum of (10) players per team.  There are times where a team may roster more than (10) players.

Q:  How many teams per grade level?

A:  The goal is to provide two teams per grade level.  There is a Black team and Red team for each grade level.  Black team will participate in a higher level league and tournaments.  Red team will participate in a competitive league based on their appropriate skill set.  Red teams have the option to play in higher level tournaments to challenge their skill set or decide to play in tournaments based on their skill set.

Q:  How is playing time handled during games?

A:  The Club program views playing time based on the use of a player's opportunities provided during a game.  If a player makes the most of their opportunity in a game, then a player could be granted more playing time by the coaching staff.  If the player does not make the most of their opportunity, then the player can be granted less playing time by the coaching staff.

Q:  What is discussed at the parent meeting?

A:  Topics at the meeting include, but are not limited to, the tryout process, fees & expenses, practices, league information, player & parent expectations and code of conduct.

Q:  When does the club season begin?

A:  The season will begin with practices starting in late September/early October and the season will conclude the end of March.  Some teams may experience playing into early April.  Most teams are done with their leagues and tournaments by the end of March.

Q:  How many games will a team typically play in a season?

A:  The number of games per team will vary based on grade.  4th grade teams play 30-35 games per season between league and five tournaments.  5th & 6th grade teams play 35-40 games per season between league games and six tournaments.  7th & 8th grade teams will play 40-45 games in a season including league games and seven tournaments. Black and Red teams will play an equivalent amount of games in a season.

Q:  Are teams allowed to play in more tournaments?

A:  The decision has been made to cap the number of tournaments and overall games.  Players develop in practices, therefore playing more games will not enhance the overall development of the players in the Club program.

Q:  Are there any opportunities for skill and conditioning training during the season?

A:  Club players are provided additional skill set training for ball handling and conditioning and stretching exercises by our director of player development.  The coaches are shown and provided with the resources to assist them during their practices.

Q:  Who coaches the club teams?

A:  A coach may be either a parent or non-parent coach.  The club strives to find the best qualified coach for the team whether it is a parent or non-parent coach.  The club requires all coaches to register and go through a background screening process.

Q:  What is the overall philosophy of the Club program?

A:  The club program's main objective is to develop players who will be ready to compete at the high school level. Developing players skills set such as shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork for defense and offense as well as rebounding.

Q:  What else can you expect from the Club program?
