Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What days of the week are used for the Jr. Pirates program?

A:  We do not have gym space to utilize during the course of the week. Therefore, skill sessions and games will be mainly played on Saturday mornings or afternoons.  Occasionally, we may need to use a Sunday based on the gym availability.

Q:  Are practices or games held during the week for the program?

A:  No practices or games will be held during the week.  All activities occur on either Saturday or Sunday. We hold two skill session weeks to evaluate participants so we can make out teams and distribute the skill levels to make teams as equitable as possible. Week one we evaluate skills and by week two, kids are placed on a team with a volunteer parent coach. Week three we begin games.

Q:  Are there a limited number of spots in the program and are there tryouts?

A:  There is no cut-off on the number of participants. Anyone who wants to play and registers on times is accepted. There are no tryouts as this is a recreational based program serving the interest of kids who want to play basketball without the competitive environment of a club basketball team.

Q:  What should my child wear?

A:  Proper gym attire should be worn at all times, including shorts or sweatpants, t-shirt and athletic shoes.  Shoes do not have to be for basketball only.  Please do not wear outdoor shoes on the gym floors!  Change into your shoes worn for basketball after you enter the building and before playing on the gym floors.

Q:  How do I size my child for their uniform?  When does my child receive their team uniform?

A:  Please feel free to stop at KM Sports on Silvernail Road to check uniform sizes. KM will have samples for you to try on before you register your child. Once you select the uniform during registration this is the size we order and your uniform to keep. Uniforms will be handed out prior to the first scheduled game. Uniforms are provided the day of the first schedule game.

Q:  What can we expect from the Jr. Pirate Program?

A:  The first two weeks will focus on teaching players the fundamentals of basketball through a series of drill stations.  Players will be placed on teams for the regular league games.  The season wraps up with the Jr. Pirates Youth Basketball Tournament.  Each team qualifies and each team will play a minimum of two games in the tournament.

Q:  Who coaches the teams and works with the kids?

A:  We need parent coaches to volunteer to coach the teams.  Anyone interested can register under the 'Coaches Info" tab in the Jr. Pirates menu.  In addition, there are staff members assisting the coaches and setting up the drill stations, organizing teams and coordinating the schedules.  There is always staff on hand during league games to provide assistance from the Pewaukee Basketball Club.

Q:  How do I become a coach?

A:  Registration is located on the site to become a coach. We need parents to volunteer to coach teams. Coaches do not have to have superior knowledge of the game yet experience is always valuable. Biggest part is having a general understanding of the game and being able to have fun and work with young kids is most important.

Q:  How are teams selected?

A:  Players are evaluated the first week and then placed on a roster.  The abilities and skills are are evaluated to make the teams as even and equitable as possible.  Therefore, we are not able to take car-pooling and special requests into consideration.

Q:  How are teams formed into divisions?

A:  Teams will be formed as follows:

  • K5-2nd Grade Girls will be combined for teams.
  • K5 & 1st Grade Boys will be combined for teams.
  • 2nd Grade Boys will be divided for teams in own division.

Q:  What if my child cannot make it one or more weeks?

A:  We would like to see every player participating every week in practices and games; however we understand other obligations and commitments you have as a family.  Once teams are formed, please notify your coach to let them know ahead of time when you will be unable to make a practice or game.

Q:  What happens if there is inclement weather?

A:  If there is inclement weather, an announcement will be posted that all Pewaukee Schools are closed.  Please check our web site and local television and radio stations for announcements.  We cannot guarantee a make-up date based on any days being canceled. Sorry there are no refunds due to canceling a date.

Q:  Are parents required to stay?

A:  Parents do not need to be present; however please be available in case of an emergency and be back in time to pick up your child promptly. Please understand this is not a day care/kid sitting service. If we have any issues with a participant, we will first talk to the individual child as the first step.  Second step will be to sit them out of action for the day and possibly not attend at the next session and/or game.  Third step will be to remove any disruptive participant from the program.

Q:  Who can participate in the Jr. Pirates Program?

A:  The Jr. Pirates program is open to all students who attend and/or reside within the boundaries of the Pewaukee Public School District.

Q:  Where can I find schedules, announcements and more information regarding the Pewaukee Basketball Club?

A:  Please visit our web site often for updated information.  Please bookmark our web site http://www.pewaukeebasketball.com. Dates will be post to the site as soon as we have gym space secured and reserved. Keep in mind there are a lot of moving parts and gym space is a premium in Pewaukee.  Therefore, we work as quickly as possible to reserve up to (8) dates for the Jr. Pirates program.

Q:  How does the Pewaukee Basketball Club communicate with families participating in the Jr. Pirates program?

A:  All communication will be via email. It is important during registration to share emails for your family. Sharing all emails to ensure communication is received is helpful to make sure you get the information being shared. Emails will be sent asking for volunteer coaches. Emails will be sent prior to the start of the first date, another email with the teams and game schedule, and a final email with the times for the Jr. Dribblers Showcase and Jr. Pirates Tournament. Emails can end up in your junk mail and spam filter at work so please check these places as well!

Q:  What can I do as a parent to assist the Jr. Pirates program?

A:  We need parents to run the clock and do the score sheets during games. We need parents to take turns volunteering. We have high school kids referee the games, so we ask for patience as they learn a new craft and how to work with kids and parents. Finally, we ask that you clean up after yourselves before leaving the gym. Coffee cups, water bottles, spills, wrappers and so forth please remove them and place them in the garbage.

Q:  What can I expect out of the Jr. Pirates program?

A: You can expect your child to get to have a fun experience and an opportunity to learn some basic skills about the game of basketball. This is an introduction and first step to the game of basketball and again, we want this to be a fun, learning experience for each kid.
